Every big software company — Microsoft, Adobe, Norton, even Kaspersky, and we love Kaspersky — sells the first year cheap and lets auto-renewal quietly drift to top dollar. “Free” Antivirus, Driver Updaters and “PC Speed-Up” Tools — Please Don't

These all run on the same business model: if the product is free, YOU are the product. That's why AVG, Avast and the other free antivirus programs aren't on this page — a free antivirus company still has to make money, and it makes it from you: constant scare pop-ups pushing paid upgrades, bundled extras you didn't ask for, and in the worst documented case, one of the biggest free antivirus makers was fined millions by regulators for selling its users' browsing histories on the side. The “driver updater”, registry cleaner and “speed up my PC” tools are the same racket with a different label — they install wrong or fake drivers, delete things at random, and slow the machine down with their own junk. The one thing they reliably speed up is the trip to see us. Windows keeps its own drivers current, the maker's official support page (further down this page) covers the rest, and if your computer is genuinely slow, that's a symptom with a cause — bring it in and we'll find it, rather than letting a $49.95 mystery program guess.

Removing an Old Antivirus First

Two antivirus programs on one machine fight each other, and the normal uninstall almost always leaves pieces behind. Before installing anything from the cards above, run the old product's own removal tool — these are the official ones, straight from each maker.
